LALITPUR: Deepkunja Secondary School blanked Vijay Academy Secondary School 3-0 in the Coca Cola Inter-school Football Tournament on Sunday. Keshar Sen, Dhiraj Thapa and Romeo Thapa scored a goal each for the winners. In another match, Prakash Bahadur Nepali scored the solitary goal in the 49th minute to help Paropakar Adarsha Higher Secondary School beat Triratna Cooperative Secondary School 1-0. — HNS

Shooting tournament

KATHMANDU: Upendra Thapa of Banke won the men’s air-pistol championship in the Regional Open Shooting Tournament in Banke, Nepalgunj, on Sunday. Baruddin Ansari and Mohammed Ahamed finished second and third respectively. In the men’s air-rifle, Narendra Thapa, Sanjog Krishna Shrestha and Sujit Kumar Barnawal claimed the top three positions. Krishna Thapa won the women’s air-pistol followed by Madhavi Shrestha and Puspa Rokka while Rekha KC, Ramita Aryal and Anika Kusari clinched the top three positions in the air-rifle. The local shooter Abdul Wahid Ansari was declared the emerging star. — HNS

Ad hoc committee

KATHMANDU: The employees’ union at the National Sports Council have reformed their ad hoc central committee on Sunday. Makendra Bahadur Singh was reinstated as the president of the 23-member committee. The primary objectives of the committee would be to draft new constituion and conduct election in the next six months. — HNS

Kadhim to be tested

NEWCASTLE: English Premiership club Newcastle have handed a trial to Swedish teenager Saif Kadhim. Kadhim, 15, was spotted playing for Ersboda SK and Kadhi will be offered a two-year contract if he impresses during his time at St James’ Park. He told Swedish newspaper Vasterbottens Folkblad: “If Newcastle want me I will go directly. If I do well during the trial I will get a grant to study at the football academy for two years.” — AFP

Betis appoint Irureta

SEVILLE: Real Betis has appointed Javier Irureta as coach on a one-year contract. Irureta will have option to stay for a second year if he leads the team to a European place next season, the club said. The Basque coach replaces Llorenc Serra Ferrer, who’s contract was not renewed after a season where Betis narrowly avoided relegation and was eliminated from the Champions League group stage. — AP
