Junior tennis ends

LALITPUR: Sandesh Singh Rathor defeated Niraj Wagle 9-6 in the boys’ U-10 final at the Birthday Cup Junior Tennis Championship, organised by All Nepal Lawn Tennis Association to mark the 31st birthday of Crown Prince Paras. Gaurav Shah beat Anil Regmi 6-3, 6-1 in the U-14 final while Sarita Adhikari bagged the U-14 girls’ title beating Kencho Palden 6-7, 7-6, 6-3. Mina Gurung (U-10 ) and Kecho Palden ( U-12) in the girls’ section and Gaurav Shah (U-12) and Ramesh Karki (U-16) in the boys’ section claimed the titles on Saturday. — HNS

United eye Vogel

MANCHESTER: Manchester United have targeted AC Milan midfielder Johann Vogel, the Italian club have claimed. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been on the lookout to reinforce his midfield following a series of injuries. Paul Scholes is out for the season with eye trouble, John O’Shea is recovering from fractured ribs and Ryan Giggs is suffering a hamstring strain. Milan claimed Vogel was a target but the Italian giants do not want to sell. — AFP

Ndereba wins in Japan

OSAKA: Athens Olympic silver medallist Catherine Ndereba overcame a 400-metre deficit to beat Kayoko Obata for her first victory in Japan at the Osaka international women’s marathon . The Kenyan finished in two hours 25 minutes five seconds. It was the 2003 world champion’s eighth career victory out of 16 starts. Obata was second in 2:25:52, followed by fellow Japanese Kiyoko Shimahara third in 2:26:47. — AFP
