TAC knock Jhapa out, make it to last four

Pokhara, January 23

Tribhuvan Army Club defeated RumPum Jhapa-XI 2-0 to enter the semi-finals of the 15th Aaha Rara Gold Cup here at the Pokhara Stadium today.

Second half goals from Nawayug Shrestha and skipper Bharat Khawas sent the three-time finalists to the last four. Jhapa were able to hold the physically-strong TAC, who played power game from the beginning, to a goalless draw in the first half but the Armymen hit two goals in the second half.

Shrestha opened the scoring a minute into the second half when he found the back of the nets through a flick header following a pass from Deep Kumar Lama. Skipper Khawas doubled the advantage in the 58th minute to ensure TAC’s victory. Shrestha was named the man-of-the-match and received Rs 3,000 sponsored by Sahara Hong Kong, sister wing of Sahara Club of Pokhara.

TAC coach Nabin Neupane accepted that his side capitalised on the poor physical fitness of their opponents. “We were able to score goals as we made chances in our approach in the second half after we failed to find the back of the nets in the first half,” said Neupane. Jhapa coach Sanjay Rai said his team missed the services of key players due to injury.

In Tuesday’s last quarter-final match, CMG Club Sankata will take on Bangladesh’s Narayangunj Football Club. Narayangunj was included in the tournament at the last hour after fellow Bangladeshi team, Farashgunj Sporting Club withdrew citing technical reasons.
