Wanchen sets record

KATHMANDU: Wanchen Dhondup shot 4-under 68 to set new amateur record at the Gokarna Golf Club during the Surya Nepal Gokarna Monthly Medal Golf Tournament on Saturday.

Wanchen, the No 2 amateur golfer of the country, broke the record of three-under 69 held jointly by AT Sherpa and CB Bhandari, who is now a professional golfer.

Wanchen carded birdies on the sixth and ninth in his two-under 34 on the front nine. On the turn, Wanchen sank an eagle on the 12th and followed that with a birdie to be on his way to a big score. But he ran out of his luck on the par-four 17th hole where he was forced for a three-putt bogey.

Playing with four handicap allowances, Wanchen won the event with 64 nett points. Tendi Sherpa, an 17-handicap player, scored 87 gross points to finish second with 70 nett points. AT Sherpa, who returned the five-over 77 card, came third with 71 nett points. The event was played under the stroke play format.In all, 24 players took part in the second event of tournament. Suman Sachdev, Director of Gokarna Forest Resort, gave away the prizes to the winners. A total of eight events will be held in the 2009 season and the golfer earning the maximum points will win the Club championship. MD Mool was the winner of the first event held earlier this month.
