Xavier Malisse, Ginepri move to next round

Lyon, October 26:

Seventh-seeded Xavier Malisse of Belgium beat Julien Benneteau of France 6-2, 7-6 (5) in the second round of the Lyon Grand Prix on Thursday.

Malisse reached his seventh quarter-final of the season. He has played two finals this year and lost both, at Adelaide and Delray Beach. Malisse was joined in the quarter-finals by Robby Ginepri of the United States, who beat Simon Greul 6-1, 6-2.

Ginepri improved to 22-24 for the season, and reached his second straight quarter-final — following on from the Madrid Masters, where he lost to Roger Federer.

Elsewhere in Basel, Fernando Gonzalez beat Mardy Fish of the US 6-7 (5), 6-4, 7-6 (8) in the second round of the Swiss Indoors. Fish led 6-2 in the third-set tiebreaker, but Gonzalez won the next four points. The Chilean then saved two more before Fish double-faulted on the last point to hand Gonzalez the match.
