Young late goal sinks Everton
London, December 8:
Ashley Young scored with only seconds of injury time remaining on Sunday to give Aston Villa a 3-2 win at Everton and move the team into fifth place in the English Premier League.
Everton had looked to have earned a draw when defender Joleon Lescott scored his team’s second equaliser just 30 seconds earlier, but Young burst through the middle, slalomed past Lescott and hit a right-foot shot past goalkeeper Tim Howard.
The finish was similar to his goal that had put Villa ahead 2-1 in the 54th and had looked likely to be the winner until Lescott scored his second goal of the game with a spectacular volley. Villa’s other goal came from Steve Sidwell, who scored after just 34 seconds for the quickest goal so far this season. The win lifted Villa to 28 points, one less than Arsenal, who occupy the last of the four lucrative Champions League qualifying spots.
Portsmouth drew 1-1 at West Bromwich Albion. West Brom captain Jonathan Greening put the Baggies ahead in the 39th minute but Peter Crouch equalised 19 minutes later.
Liverpool kept the lead on Saturday when they won 3-1 at Blackburn, with Chelsea a point back in second after a 2-0 win at Bolton. Third-place Manchester United won 1-0 at Sunderland, while Arsenal beat Wigan 1-0.
Spanish La Liga
MADRID: Real Madrid remained nine points behind Spanish La Liga leaders Barcelona after Sunday’s 4-3 defeat to Sevilla.
Sevilla took the lead through Adriano and although Raul equalised, Sevilla led 3-1 at the break through Ndri Romaric and Frederic Kanoute. Higuain made it 3-2 in the 66th and two minutes later Madrid were level when Fernando Gago headed home Guti’s free kick. However, the dismissal of Arjen Robben disrupted their momentum and Renato headed an 85th-minute winner for the visitors. Elsewhere, goals from Angel Lafita and Omar Bravo enabled Deportivo La Coruna to see off Malaga 2-0. Espanyol came from behind to draw 1-1 at Real Betis. Recreativo Huelva twice came from behind to beat Real Mallorca 3-2. Osasuna dropped back into last place after blowing a three-goal advantage in a 3-3 draw with Valladolid.
