Centurion, March 13:
South African fast bowler Monde Zondeki plunged Zimbabwe to an innings and 62 runs defeat on the third day of the second Test at Centurion Park on Sunday. Zondeki, 22, playing in his second Test, took 6-39 as Zimbabwe collapsed to 149 all out after South Africa declared their first innings with a lead of 211. Building up impressive pace, the wiry Zondeki took a wicket with his first ball and claimed three wickets for seven runs in his first six overs as Zimbabwe plunged to 29 for four. Then he ended a promising stand between Hamilton Masa-kadza (47) and Tatenda Taibu (13), dismissing both batsmen, before wrapping up the innings when he had tailender Graeme Cremer.
For Zimbabwe, it was another dismal performance after they had shown some fight earlier in the match. Maskakadza and Taibu put on 47 for the fifth wicket and there was a stand of 58 for the seventh wicket between Heath Streak (16) and Elton Chigumbura (44). But when Streak was caught at second slip off Kallis it started another slide in which the last four wickets fell for six runs in 16 balls. Kallis limped off with what appeared to be a recurrence of a hip injury after his first spell of six overs. He returned after tea and his second spell was crucial, as he took two wickets to seal Zimbabwe’s fate. He finished with 2-20.
