Kathmandu, April 28
Nepal defeated Malaysia by 59 runs in the final of the ACC U-16 Eastern Region Cricket Tournament at the Prem Tinsulanonda International School grounds in Chiang Mai, Thailand today.
Batting first, defending champions Nepal posted 140-9 in their allotted 35 overs before packing Malaysia for 81 runs with one ball to spare. Prashant Mahat top scored for Nepal with 40 off 67 balls that included five boundaries, while opener Deepak Bohara struck two fours and a six in his 19-ball 23.
Skipper Bishal Bikram KC scored 17 off 27 balls hitting a six, while Nikhil Kumar Singh struck a four in his 19-ball 13. Nepal were reduced to 33-3 inside nine overs before Mahat and KC revived the innings with a 35-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
Mahat then added 27 runs for the fifth wicket with Rohan Dudhraj BK (nine) before Nepal lost five wickets for 36 runs. Tilak Raj Bhandari (eight) and Ramesh Kurmi (two) scored nine runs off 10 balls for the unbroken 10th wicket. Sachinu Hettige took three wickets for Malaysia, while Jinebdra Muraly grabbed two.
In reply, Malaysia were never in contention and lost wickets at regular interval. Muhammad Haziq Aiman top scored for the team with 18, while opener Wan Muhammad Azam (16) and Jinendra Muraly (14) were the only other two batsmen to score in double figures. Bishal Kumar Patel was the pick of the Nepali bowlers taking 4-18 and he was ably supported by Deepak Bohara (3-16). Nikhil Kumar Singh and Krish Karki also grabbed one wicket each.
Bishal Bikram KC of Nepal was adjudged the player of the tournament, while Sachinu Hettige of Malaysia and Girin Rahul Gune of Singapore won the best bowler and batter awards respectively.
