17 feared dead in Andhra boat mishap

Hyderabad, August 16:

An overloaded boat capsized in a canal in southern India today, killing at least four people, police said. At least 13 people were reported missing and feared drowned. There were between 25 and 27 people aboard the boat when it got caught in heavy rains and capsized in the Buckingham canal in the Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh, said the police district superintendent, V C Sajjanar. Eight of the people aboard the boat swam to shore, Sajjanar said. Rescuers pulled four bodies from the canal, and at least 13 other people were missing and feared drowned, he said. The PTI reported that the boat was only designed for 10 passengers.
