After election, Sri Lanka PM invites rivals to work together

COLOMBO: Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has invited all political parties in the island nation to work together after his party won the most seats in Monday's Parliamentary election.

He said Wednesday that he will be sworn in for a new term as prime minister and that party officials were working to gain seven more seats to give his party an outright majority.

Wickremesinghe's United National Party won 106 seats, seven short of a majority in the 225-member Parliament. Former strongman leader Mahinda Rajapaksa failed in his bid for a political comeback eight months after being defeated in a presidential election as his party won 95 seats.
