VIENNA: Japanese candidate Yukiya Amano won the race Thursday to head the International Atomic Energy Agency, diplomats said.

Amano was elected by the nuclear watchdog's 35-member board to succeed Mohamed ElBaradei, after three earlier secret ballots Thursday had failed to produce a consensus.
