Ex-Romanian president probed over suspected money laundering

BUCHAREST: Romania's former president says he is being investigated on suspicion of money laundering related to a real estate deal reached when he was mayor of Bucharest.

Traian Basescu says he's been told by prosecutors at Romania's top court that he is suspected of wrongdoing in the purchase and sale of a house and land in 2000 and 2002.

Basescu has denied wrongdoing and says the case was closed in 2015.

There was no immediate confirmation on the case from prosecutors.

Romania Curata, an anti-corruption group, says Basescu bought and sold the real estate at a large profit from a businessman, whose companies secured lucrative infrastructure projects with the government.

Basescu was mayor of Bucharest from 2000 to 2004 before being elected president, serving 10 years in two terms.
