Foreign sex workers elude convictions

Colombo, April 25:

Prostitutes from China, Russia and Ukraine are successfully eluding convictions in Sri Lanka because local police don’t have enough translators to help them complete cases, authorities said today. “In most cases, we are not even able to record their statements as they say they can only speak and write in their native tongue,” said Sarath Lugoda, the director of the Sri Lankan national police’s Crimes Division. Though the government has loosened visa regulations to attract more tourists, it has led to an influx of foreign prostitutes, mainly from

China, Russia and Ukraine, police said.
