Shimla, June 2:

Plagued by traffic pollution, the holiday resort of Manali in Himachal Pradesh has started levying environment tax on vehicles entering the town from outside the state.Manali has become the first town in the hill state — and perhaps in India — to levy such a tax. The measure came into effect yesterday. The cess is Rs 100 on two-wheelers, Rs 200 on cars and Rs.300-500 for medium and heavy vehicles. The notification issued by the tourism department says the levy will be valid for a week. “The revenue collected would be spent on creating infrastructure facilities like better roads and civic amenities,” said tourism minister Vijay Singh Mankotia.
