India, Myanmar talk border security

Yangon: India’s visiting foreign minister and Myanmar’s top leader have agreed that a “stable security environment” along their shared border is a common goal and pledged to launch infrastructure projects in the area, an Indian Embassy statement said. During talks on Saturday with Myanmar’s Senior Gen Than Shwe, India’s External Affairs Minister K Natwar Singh “welcomed the resolve of the Myanmar leadership to continue cooperating actively with India” to strengthen security and thwart terrorist activities in the border region. They also agreed to implement infrastructure projects along the frontier, said the statement released late yesterday. It did not elaborate. Following the meeting, Singh travelled to Mandalay to meet members of the Indian community. — AP
