Travel chaos in India

NEW DELHI: Thick fog across northern India has disrupted hundreds of flights and caused chaos on the densely populated region’s roads, officials said on Thursday. “The last time we had such dense fog conditions was in 2003,” BP Yadav, spokesman for the New Delhi weather office, told AFP. More than 170 domestic and international flights were delayed, diverted or cancelled at New Delhi airport on Wednesday, while scores more flights were also hit on Thursday morning. Police reported multiple accidents and long tailbacks on roads, while traffic on national highways was reduced to a crawl as drivers struggled with poor visibility. Railway schedules were also affected with many trains cancelled.

KHAR: A roadside bomb apparently targeting anti-Taliban elders killed one woman and injured 22 others on Thursday in Pakistan’s northwest tribal belt bordering Afghanistan, officials said. The explosion hit their bus in Salarzai district in the tribal region of Bajaur, a day after a similar bomb planted in the road injured a provincial parliamentarian in the northwest capital Peshawar. “It was an improvised explosive device which exploded as the bus headed to the region’s main town of Khar,” local government official Mazhar Ali said. “One woman was killed while 22 other passengers were wounded.”

Police, rioters clash

BEIJING: Villagers tossed petrol bombs in a clash with police in southern China that left up to 10 injured, the latest in a rash of violent incidents linked to land disputes, state press reports said on Thursday. Up to 40 rioters in Guangdong province, fearing eviction, clashed on Tuesday with more than 100 police officers who responded with non-lethal “riot guns” and tear gas, said the Qingyuan Daily, a Guangdong newspaper. It said police had arrived in the township to arrest a local man surnamed Huang suspected of storing petrol to make bombs.
