Officials: Gunmen attack police station in Kazakhstan

MOSCOW: Kazakhstan's intelligence agency says unknown gunmen attacked a police station in Almaty, the country's largest city.

The attack comes a month after 20 people were killed in the Kazakh city of Aktobe when groups of gunmen attacked a military base and a gun shop. Authorities described the violence as a terrorist attack and blamed it on radical Islamists.

Kazakhstan's National Security Committee said in a statement Monday it raised the terror threat level to red after the attack on the police station. It would not elaborate

Casualties were not officially reported but local media said at least seven police officers have been taken to hospital in critical condition. Newsweb-site Tengrinews.kz posted a picture of a handcuffed suspect lying on the ground.
