PM rules out Indian troops for Iraq

New Delhi, July 7:

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today ruled out the po-ssibility of India sending troops to Iraq and said his government did not wish to divide the nation on matters of foreign policy.

Responding to BJP’s attack on External Affairs Minister K Natwar Singh for allegedly making misleading statements on the issue, Singh said: "As of now there is no change in policy. There is no proposal to send troops to Iraq." Singh pointed out that parliament had passed a resolution on the issue, asserting that if there were any rethink then the government would "undertake maximum possible consultation with various sections." "In matters relating to foreign policy will be effort of our government to work on the basis of the broadest possible national consensus. "We do not wish to divide to the house or country on sensitive foreign policy issues."
