Quake off Sumatra
Hong Kong, July 31:
A strong earthquake has struck off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, Hong Kong seismologists said today. No damage or injuries were reported. The tremor struck late yesterday and was recorded in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Observatory said in a statement. It was centered off the coast of northern Sumatra, about 100 km west-southwest of Banda Aceh, the statement said. Meanwhile, a report from Taipei said an earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale rocked Taiwan today, seismologists said. There were no reports of damage or casualties. The quake had an epicenter 17 km northeast of Hualien county.
