Mine blast kills 14

BEIJING: A mine explosion in southwestern China’s Guizhou province on Monday killed 14 workers and another two were missing, state media reported. Thirty-nine miners were underground at the Wanzi Coal Mine in Luipanshui city when the blast occurred, Xinhua news agency said. Meanwhile, as many as 102 miners were trapped after an underground mine was flooded in China’s southern Guangdong province and chances of a rescue appeared slim, reports Xinhua.— AFP

RATMALANA: A train struck an empty passenger car sitting on a railroad track in southern Sri Lanka on Monday, injuring at least 20 people, police said. The train crashed into the carriage in Ratmalana, about 20 km south of the capital Colombo. The carriage had accidentally broken

Blast kills TDP leader

HYDERABAD: A Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader in Andhra Pradesh was killed in a blast outside a college on Monday in what appears to be a return of factional violence in the state’s Rayalaseema region. Tirupataiah was killed in Anantapur town in front of SV College with dozens of students watching in horror. Unidentified assailants attacked him as he was returning after dropping his niece at the college on a two-wheeler. — HNS
