DHAKA: Two opposition figures were gunned down in Bangladesh in separate attacks, police said on Tuesday. Opposition Awami League member Humayun Bashar Kabir was attacked by three men outside his home in Na-rayanganj, police official said. Another Awami member, Moniruzzaman Monir, was in a grocery store in Faridpur when five men opened fire. His supporters called for a general strike on Tuesday to protest his murder. — AP

Flu outbreak in China

BEIJING: China on Tuesday reported a new outbreak of deadly bird flu which has infected 128 geese and ducks in the northwestern Xinjiang region, killing 63 of them, the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation told AFP. The outbreak — the third reported by the Chinese government in the past two months — occurred in Changji city near Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang, said the FAO quoting Chinese government data. — AFP

KOLKATA: A woman in a West Bengal village was killed as her son slapped her hard over a long-standing property dispute. Media reports on Tuesday said that 75-year-old Kiranbala Shi’s son Pratap tried to hush up the matter by dumping her body in a pond in a neighbouring village. — HNS
