Five ULFA men killed
GUWAHATI: At least five militants were killed by security men in two encounters in Assam, officials said on Tuesday. Police said army soldiers on Monday shot dead three militants of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) in a shootout near Kathalguri village. Postman, teacher shot
BANGKOK: Two more Thai civil servants were shot and killed on Tuesday in the kingdom’s Muslim-majority south. Thawatchai Sakulcharoenwong, a postman in Than To district, was shot four times as he drove his motorcycle to work on Tuesday. “He was pronounced dead at Than To hospital,” police said. A second fatal attack was against teacher Viroj Wannasen, who was driving his pickup truck to his school in Panare. — AFP
Jail for insulting prez
JAKARTA: A court has sentenced a student leader to six months in jail for insulting president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, a report said on Tuesday. Judges at Central Jakarta district court found Mongang Johannes Tambunan, a member of the National Students’ Movement of Indonesia, guilty of insulting the president. — AFP
