US-backed fighters, mostly Kurds, advance against IS in north Syria

BEIRUT: US-backed Syrian fighters advanced against Islamic State in the last tract of territory they hold near the Turkish border on Wednesday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said.

The British-based Observatory said the Kurdish YPG militia made up the majority of forces involved in the attack, contradicting US officials who said the operation would be mostly comprised of Syrian Arab fighters.

US-led air strikes killed 15 civilians including three children near Manbij in the last 24 hours, the Observatory said.
