Telecom exec sacked HONG KONG: A senior executive of telecoms giant China Mobile has been stripped of his positions due to his alleged involvement in “serious economic problems,” the company said on Thursday. Zhang Chunjiang, the subject of a government probe, has been removed from his positions as Communist party secretary and vice president of state-owned China Mobile, a company spokeswoman said. The state-owned parent company had recommended Zhang be removed from vice-chairmanship and executive directorship of the Hong Kong-listed arm of the firm. Compensation deal REYKJAVIK: Iceland’s parliament approved on Wednesday a payout of nearly four billion euros to Britain and the Netherlands, which compensated tens of thousands of savers in failed Icelandic online bank, Icesave. Although the payout has stirred up resentment among many ordinary Icelanders hard hit by their country’s financial meltdown in 2008, lawmakers approved by a vote of 33 to 30 the measure which had threatened to become a major obstacle in the small Atlantic island nation’s bid to join the European Union. The measure approves the payout of 3.8 billion euros to the British and Dutch governments, which partially compensated over 320,000 of their savers.
