School reconstruction begins in Dakshinkali

KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 24

Chief Executive Officer of National Reconstruction Authority Sushil Gyawali, head of Press Naveen Kumar, Information and Culture wing of the Embassy of India, and mayor of Dakshinkali Municipality jointly carried out the groundbreaking ceremony for reconstruction of Shree Champa Devi Secondary School in Dakshinkali, Kathmandu, today.

Representatives of the School Management Committee and locals also attended the event. According to a press release issued by the embassy, this is the 66th school being reconstructed under the grant assistance of the Government of India. India has committed grant assistance of US$ 50 million rupees for reconstruction of a total of 71 educational institutions in eight districts of Nepal. India has also committed grant assistance of another 200 million rupees for reconstruction projects in the health, cultural heritage and housing sectors.

Champa Devi Secondary School is being reconstructed at a cost of 68.5 million rupees and will be built as per earthquake-resilient reconstruction norms of the Government of Nepal. The new infrastructure will include two blocks, each comprising 13 classrooms, practical rooms, administrative room, library and separate sanitation facilities for boys and girls in each floor.

The Central Building Research Institute, Roorkee, a premier institute in India in the field of earthquake-resilient reconstruction, will provide technical hand-holding for construction of these schools. The embassy is also working with the NRA to start work on construction of 147 health buildings and restoration/retrofitting of 28 cultural heritage sites, according to the release.
