KATHMANDU; From December 2005 to June 2009, 15 children from 9-15 years of age went missing from the city centre, but their whereabouts is still unknown. Those disappeared included seven girls. Nepal Police (NP) -in compliance with the complaints filed by guardians- has identified the missing ones as Purna Kumari Rai (11), Sunil Adhikari (12), Mamata Shrestha (10), Rabi Chaudhary (12), Raju Tamang (15), Dev Bahadur Karki (13), Anju Lama (9), Bimala Poudel (12), Anu Giri (10), Raj Kumar Thapa Magar (12), Sita Mandal (9), Rajesh Thapa (14), Anish Chhetri (12), Subash BK (13) and Sarita Thakuri (12). Of those who went missing during the period, Dev Bahadur, who hailed from Kangel- 8 of Solukhumbu, was last seen in Bouddha- 6 on December 31, 2005. Since then, the police have continued the search without any success to trace his whereabouts. Purna Kumari, who originally hailed from Khanigaun- 5 of Nuwakot, was last seen in Lazimpat, Kathmandu on March 16, 2008. She was then dressed in red shirt. Their guardians, who still hold out hope, have been longingly for their safe return home. Lately, Nepal Police has posted the details of the absconding kids in its website, pleading for anyone with information to contact them. Meanwhile, a police official said that the missing kids were either trafficked to neighbouring India or confined to forced labour elsewhere in the Kathmandu Valley. 'The efforts to find them are on,' he added, requesting to be unnamed. Every year round, dozens of children are reportedly missing. The whereabouts of many are unknown despite prolong search by the police. Police said some of the missing children end their life tragically. They are also molested, killed or ransomed in case they are abducted by perpetrators. In some cases, parents have the clue about their missing children, but cannot afford to bring them home due to the lack of resources, and proper knowledge about geographical distance.
