CEC meets PM over election dates

KATHMANDU, OCTOBER 25
Election Commission office-bearers met Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba to discuss the date for National Assembly election. Nineteen seats of the 59-member Upper House will fall vacant after March 5 for which the poll panel will have to hold elections.
Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya and other commissioners went to Baluwatar and discussed NA polls with Deuba. Ministers were also present in the meeting.
According to a press release issued by the EC, the poll panel discussed dates for the byelection for four vacant House of Representatives seats and 18 provincial assembly seats.
Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari said they dwelt on NA polls and civic elections.
Local levels have go to polls after six months. EC office bearers also discussed using modern technology in the polls and granting voting rights to Nepalis living abroad as per the Supreme Court's directives.
EC office bearers also discussed registering voters outside home districts.
According to EC press release, the PM told EC office bearers that the government would soon fix the date for NA elections but would consult other parties about dates of byelections and local-level elections.
