Local election updates: Nepali Congress extends lead, Balen marches ahead in Kathmandu

KATHMANDU, MAY 20
As the vote counting of local level election is underway across the nation, Nepali Congress has secured 296 victories in mayor/chairman posts and 269 deputy positions.
According to the Election Commission, CPN-UML which had forged coalition with Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) is behind NC with 183 and 205 victories in mayor and deputy positions respectively.
As of now, CPN-Maoist has mustered third position with 115 and 121 victories in mayor and deputy positions respectively.

Meanwhile in Kathmandu, independent candidate Balen Shah contesting for mayor position is leading the vote count with 28,020 to Keshav Stiphit's 14,548 votes. NC's Srijana Shrestha is trailing with 13,920 votes.
Former Miss Newa Sunita Dongol of CPN-UML contesting for deputy mayor is leading with 24,592 votes to Rameshwor Shrestha contesting under CPN (Unified Socialist) with 7,868 votes.
In Butwal Sub-Metropolitan City, NC candidate Khel Raj Pandey has secured 23,433 votes to CPN-UML candidate Baburam Bhattrai's 17,039 votes.
Likewise, CPN-UML candidate Sabitri Devi Aryal is leading in deputy mayor's position with 18,875 votes to five party alliance candidate Chin Bahadur Gurung's 13,411 votes
