Local levels elect 14,402 women reps

KATHMANDU, MAY 26

A total of 14,402 women were elected out of 55,699 women candidates in the local levels in the recently held election, the Election Commission said. This accounts for 40.89 per cent of the total elected representatives.

Phulbati Rajbanshi was elected chair and Pujan Neupane Kunwar as vice-chair of Gaurigunj Rural Municipality in Jhapa. In Bhairawai Rural Municipality of Dailekh, Rita Shahi and Devi Bhandari were elected chair and vice-chair, respectively. Likewise, both women candidates made it to the post of mayor and deputy-mayor in Lamki Chuha Municipality. Sushila Shahi was elected mayor and Juna Chaudhary as deputy-mayor in Lamki Chuha. Of the 8,196 women candidates in Province 1, 2,455 women were elected while 2,700 women candidates made it to the post from among 15,780 women candidates in Madhes.

Likewise, 2,347 women were elected from 8,344 women candidates in Bagmati.

According to the EC, 1,622 of 4,649 women candidates won the election in Gandaki and2,124 out of 8,767 in Lumbini. Similarly, 1,524 women won in Karnali, and the number of women winning the poll in Sudurpaschim was 1,560 out of 5,085.
