KATHMANDU, AUGUST 18

The meeting of House of Representatives on Thursday agreed to accept proposal on the 'controversial' citizenship bill, which was recently returned by the President Bidhya Devi Bhandhari asking for a reconsideration.

The proposal was presented by Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand today and subsequently passed by majority in the parliament.

President Bhandari had earlier asked the Parliament to settle issues pertaining to the citizenship by revisiting corresponding policies in the historical perspective, thoroughly analysing citizenship policies post 1952 and to seek permanent solution to citizenship related questions.

According to the President, none of the bills (the bill which was previously brought by the Oli government, the citizenship ordinance brought by the Oli government, and the current bill) were complete, hence, asking the House to reconsider it.

Further discussion on the topic is ongoing.
