CPN (US) to analyse govt policies before extending support

KATHMANDU, JANUARY 2

The Madhav Kumar Nepal-led CPN (Unified Socialist) today decided to extend support to the Pushpa Kamal Dahal-led government only after analysing the government's policies and programmes.

CPN (US) Spokesperson Jagannath Khatiwada told mediapersons after the party's politburo meeting that the party was favourably disposed towards Dahal, but would decide on supporting his government only after analysing its policies. 'We have not yet received any formal letter from the government seeking our support, so we are not discussing whether or not we should support the government,' Khatiwada said.

Khatiwada said if the government sent a formal letter seeking its support, his party would first analyse whether there was convergence of ideas between his party and the government's policies. The party's politburo meeting will continue tomorrow.

Khatiwada said almost all party leaders who spoke today during the politburo meeting were of the view that the party should focus on achieving political goals. He said the party was in favour of left unity.

Senior CPN (US) leader Jhalanath Khanal said the party should enforce oneperson-one-post rule in all structures of the party committee.

The CPN (US) has 10 seats in the 275-member House of Representatives. Its leaders are miffed at Dahal for not consulting them before deciding to break away from the Nepali Congress and join hands with the CPN-UML.
