Nine parties blast anti-system activities

KATHMANDU, MARCH 5

A joint statement of nine political parties today said their serious attention was drawn to some activities that were contrary to the spirit of the democratic republic.

The parties asserted they were united on achieving lasting peace, good governance, development and prosperity in the country by protecting the constitution.

The statement said the recent activities were anti-democratic and undesirable, and the parties were determined to move forward unitedly in defence of the constitution and the democratic republic.'

'For some time now, our attention has been seriously drawn to the issues of transitional justice. We are committed to bring the remaining work of the peace process to a logical conclusion as per the Comprehensive Peace Accord. Some work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission for Investigation of Disappeared Persons has been completed, and the remaining work will be completed soon,' the statement added. The statement also said a bill was necessary to give justice to conflict victims and their families and the bill would be presented in this session of the Parliament in compliance with the decision of the Supreme Court.

Today, the eight-parties alliance met at the official residence of the prime minister to discuss the anti-constitutional activities that had picked up in recent times.

Ramesh Lekhak of the Nepali Congress informed that the meeting decided to discourage activities that were against the system and the constitution. He also said that the transitional justice bill would be taken to the Parliament and laws would be formulated keeping in mind the victims' families.

When asked how the meeting had approached the court's permission to register a writ against the prime minister, he said, 'We believe the court will also play a supportive role.'

When asked about the power sharing deal among the parties, he said the issue would be discussed after the presidential election.

He added that the parties also discussed the increased activities of monarchists.

The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Dahal, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, CPN (United Socialist) General Secretary Beduram Bhusal, Janamat Party Vice-president Md. Abdul Khan, LSP-N President Mahantha Thakur, Nepal Samajwadi Party President Baburam Bhattarai, Rastriya Jana Morcha President Chitra Bahadur KC, JSP-N Leader Rajendra Shrestha and others.
