Former school teacher Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav, who started his political career from the Gajendra Narayan Singh-led Nepal Sadbhawana Party, was elected the vice-president.

Yadav, who was supported by the majority constituents of the 10-party ruling alliance secured 30,328 weighted votes from 184 federal and 329 provincial lawmakers.

Election Officer Mahesh Sharma Paudel declared Yadav the winner who secured majority votes. Four votes of provincial lawmakers were declared invalid.

Besides his own party, Nepali Congress, CPN-Maoist Centre, and CPN-Unified Socialist voted for him. UML candidate for vice-president Asta Laxmi Shakya got 16,328 weighted votes from 104 federal and 169 provincial lawmakers.

Janamat Party candidate for vice-president Mamata Jha secured 2,537 weighted votes from 23 federal and 15 provincial lawmakers. As Janamat party candidate Jha secured votes of 23 federal lawmakers, it can be concluded that some of the constituents of the 10-party ruling alliance also voted for her.

Earlier, Janamat Party, Loktantrik Samajwadi Party-Nepal and Nagarik Unmukti Party had teamed up for vice presidential election. Janamat Party has only six federal lawmakers. JSP-N candidate for vice-president Pramila Yadav, who had opted out of the race got 48 votes from one provincial lawmaker.

In the parliamentary election held on November 20, Yadav had won from Bara constituency-2 on Janata Samajwadi Party-Nepal ticket. Yadav is a permanent resident of Simraungadh Municipality.

Born to Prasay Ray Yadav and Sihawa Yadav on 24 July 1974 at Kochorba Ram Sahay Yadav obtained BEd. (Mathematics) Degree from Thakur Ram Multiple Campus, Birgunj in 1999. He also holds a BSC Degree (1990-1993) from Dr Baba Saheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar University, Muzaffarpur, India.

He started teaching in 1991 and quit the profession in 2008 before contesting the Constituent Assembly election.

Yadav joined the NSP in 1990 and later joined the erstwhile Madhesi Janadhikar Forum in 2002. Yadav participated in the 2006 popular movement in Kathmandu and was arrested. He led the agitation during Madhes movement in 2006 in some Tarai districts. Yadav held the Environment and Forest portfolio in the Sher Bahadur Deuba Cabinet before November 20 elections. He has to now resign as lawmaker.
