55 cases of press freedom violation reported last year

The Federation of Nepali Journalists said the year 2022 also remained daunting for working journalists and media houses.

According to a report released by the umbrella organisation of Nepali journalists, the media fraternity faced changing modus operandi against press freedom with the development and expansion of new technologies for issuing threats to journalists and media houses.

The FNJ said the persons or groups who disagreed with the news and views threatened journalists and media houses for their work. In the year 2022, digital media emerged as a platform for intimidating mediapersons.

The FNJ also reported unauthorised access to content management system, widespread launching of unfollow campaign, issuance of threats through social media and hacking, among others.

According to the FNJ, the year 2022 recorded 55 cases of press freedom violation compared to 75 in the previous year.

These incidents affected a total of 93 journalists and eight media houses. There were two incidents of arrests, seven of obstructions, 24 of threats and intimidation, 11 of attacks, one of displacement, eight of professional insecurity and two of gender-based violence.
