Within 18 months of the general election held on November 2022, Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda ditched Sher Bahadur Deuba and KP Oli and threw them under the bus turn by turn and changed the alliance for the fourth time. Now, collusion between Deuba, president of the Nepali Congress, Oli, chairman of the CPM (UML) has ditched Prachanda.
The alliance changed for the fifth time within 18 months. Change of government every now and then has become a new normal in Nepal. The people are now used to such episodes or drama staged by the traitors and corrupt for long. The people are sick of the corrupt leaders and frequent change of government. The political leaders look busy all the time designing a collusion or scam against each other for power and money. Until recently, Prachanda had been fooling the other two traitors time and again. But, this time, he was flat on his back overnight without any early warning. These thugs are always busy conspiring against each other, keeping aside their responsibility for the nation and the people. They do not bother how the country is suffering instability because of their vested interest and insatiable hunger for power and rampant corruption. This new alliance also may not last long before it becomes a victim of another scam or conspiracy.
What made Deuba and Oli, well-known political arch-rivals, come together for a collusion against the serving prime minister is a question. There are many rumours, speculations, guesses and observations in the political arena. It is also equally intriguing why Oli ditched his alliance with Prachanda and switched to Deuba.
Independent observers believe that there could be two reasons for this. The first, the possibility of the so-called 'Young Turk', Rabi Lamichhane, opening the file of the 'Giribandhu Tea State ' a well-known scam involving Oli, which could land him in jail for years, and the 'Bhutanese Refugee scam', where Arju Deuba is believed to be the main architect. The arrest of Bechan Jha and Pratik Thapa sparked the threat of Arju and Oli being arrested.
As per the victims of the scam, the fake Bhutanese Refugee scam took place when Deuba and Oli were prime minister. It seems Oli and Deuba are both directly involved. Ram Saran K.C., who handed crores of rupees to Jha, claims seeing him meet Oli in a house somewhere in New Baneshwor.
The second reason could be foreign interference, namely, Indian pressure or design to derail the Oli-Prachanda alliance. As per the local news, the Prachanda-led government was on the verge of implementing the BRI agreement with China. Under the BRI agreement, there was to be much mutually beneficial cooperation between these two countries, such as in the field of economy, environment, technology and culture.
India sees Nepal as its domain in South Asia. India takes Chinese presence in Nepal a threat to its national security as well. As Prachanda is a leftist, he could be an obstacle to
Indian interests in Nepal, though he had publicly pledged his allegiance to India in the past by forming a government comfortable to India. He is also obliged to India for supporting the Maoist movement by providing shelter, training, arms and ammunition.
Deuba, an easy going conman with no political vision and principle and a great power monger, was preferred possibly to lead the country in alliance with Oli and prevent the implementation of the BRI. The Nepali Congress wants the BRI as a grant and not as a loan and has thus been trying to avoid its implementation.
Beside the Indian role, some believe, the United States could be behind the downfall of the Prachanda-led government. The outgoing government of Prachanda was a leftist alliance of the Maoist and UMC (UML). Certainly, a unified leftist alliance would not be in the interest of a capitalist country. At present, China's fast growing economy, set to surpass the US anytime soon, poses a threat to American economic domination over the world.
On the other hand, Nepal's geopolitical location between the two giant countries like India and China is crucial. America wants to liberate Tibet from China. America sees Nepal as the best position to launch anti-China activities as it shares the northern border with Tibet along the Himalayan passes. During the rule of Prachanda, Chinese activities in Nepal were said to have been on the rise. Like India, America does not want a favourable government to China in Nepal and wants to prevent the implementation of BRI projects. The American grant under the MCC is said to be a design to thwart BRI's implementation in Nepal. To forward its interests, Deuba, a long-time friend, is seen to be a suitable successor to Prachanda, although Oli will lead the government in the first half of remaining term till the elections.
Whatever the reason, frequent change of government is not in the interest of the people and the nation. People do not expect any betterment or improvement from Oli, expect be amused by his cheap jokes as in the past. Some people have openly pronounced the current government as a corrupt one as the prime minister, the foreign minister and many other are believed to be involved in corruption scams. Oli has already shown his true colour by ordering the Nepal Electricity Authority to continue supplying electricity to industries that have billions of rupees in unpaid dues.
The people now want fundamental changes and replace the old leaders with young dynamic leaders like Mayors Balen Shah of Kathmandu and Harka Sangpang of Dharan. Let us hope the dream comes true, and old cronies vanish from the political scene at the earliest.
