KATHMANDU, NOVEMBER 27
The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) formalized a five-year partnership today by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
In a press statement, ICIMOD said, the collaboration aims to enhance climate-resilient agriculture and promote sustainable development across the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region.
The agreement also seeks to strengthen capacity for climate-resilient agriculture and food systems by conducting research on climate challenges, their impacts on agriculture, livelihoods, and mountain sustainability, according to the statement.
Additionally, the collaboration aims to foster partnerships with global centers dedicated to sustainable mountain development and to disseminate knowledge products focused on advancing climate-resilient agricultural practices.
Together, the partners will conduct research on climate challenges, identify opportunities for sustainable livelihoods, and co-actionable solutions for the region's eight member countries – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan, reads the statement.
Dr. Shahidur Rashid, IFPRI's South Asia Director, said 'This collaboration leverages IFPRI's expertise in evidence-based policymaking and ICIMOD's deep connection with mountain communities to develop impactful policy frameworks that enhance resilience and livelihoods for millions.'
Similarly, Dr. Pema Gyamtsho, ICIMOD Director General, stated, 'The Hindu Kush Himalaya faces unparalleled climate challenges. Partnering with IFPRI will amplify our research, innovation, and outreach, empowering member countries to strengthen resilience and food security in this critical time.'
According to the statement, this partnership leverages IFPRI's policy expertise related to agriculture and food systems, and ICIMOD's experience generating and sharing knowledge about the HKH and their deep connection with mountain communities.
