KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 12

Nepal and India have agreed on the modalities for constructing cross-border transmission lines.

A secretarial-level meeting between the relevant ministries of both countries, held in New Delhi on Tuesday, February 11, reached an agreement on the framework for implementation.

The transmission line is crucial for Nepal's plan to export 15,000 megawatts of electricity to India and Bangladesh by 2035.

Nepal's Energy Secretary, Suresh Acharya, and India's Electricity Secretary, Pankaj Agarwal, signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), paving the way for the construction process to move forward.

Earlier, in November 2024, Nepal's Minister for Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation, Deepak Khadka, had held discussions with Indian ministries regarding the power trade agreement, which aims to export 10,000 megawatts of electricity from Nepal to India over the next decade.

Subsequently, the 12th meeting of the Joint Steering Committee (secretarial level) convened on January 22, 2025, to advance the construction process.

During the meeting, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to facilitating power trade between Nepal and India while expediting the construction of cross-border transmission lines.
