KATHMANDU, MAY 29
The government has announced a plan to make Nepal self-reliant in rice production within two years.
Presenting the national budget, Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel outlined initiatives such as modernizing agriculture, expanding fertilizer and seed supply, and training the agricultural workforce, to boost domestic rice output.
Agriculture and livestock development will be promoted through zoning and sub-zoning, with special programs in designated areas.
To enhance food security, allocations have been made for self-reliance in food grains, vegetables, and meat. The budget includes measures to preserve soil fertility and promote organic farming.
The government has also planned to control wild animals like monkeys, wild boars, and blue bulls that damage crops, while encouraging the cultivation of crops like ginger in affected areas. It will also promote quality seed production, meat exports, and production of 42.8 million fish fry. Export promotion of cardamom, tea, and coffee is also included.
