The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed serious concern over the escalating Gen Z protests against corruption and the government's social media ban, urging authorities to immediately stop the excessive use of force and to address the concerns raised by the younger generation.

In a statement issued on Monday, the commission confirmed that its monitoring teams deployed in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Butwal, Chitwan, Biratnagar, Rautahat, Sunsari, Jhapa, and Dang faced violent attacks while carrying out field observations.

According to the NHRC, protests that began in Kathmandu's Maitighar and moved towards Baneshwor saw police resort to baton charges, water cannons, tear gas, and live fire when demonstrators attempted to enter the Federal Parliament premises. The commission said dozens of people have been killed and many more injured in the clashes.

Expressing condolences to the deceased, the NHRC called for free medical treatment for the injured, immediate relief and compensation to victims' families, and a credible and impartial investigation into the incidents. It further stressed that those found responsible must face strict action.

'The Constitution of Nepal and international human rights laws guarantee every individual the right to peaceful expression of dissent,' the statement reads. 'A democratic government must identify and address legitimate voices of citizens in a timely manner. The use of excessive force by security agencies as well as violent incidents during protests are deeply concerning.'

The NHRC also appealed to protesters to ensure that demonstrations remain peaceful, disciplined, and restrained, while reminding the government of its duty to maintain law and order without violating fundamental rights.
