KATHMANDU, NOVEMBER 9
Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagadish Kharel has emphasized the need for public service broadcasting to be high-quality, reliable, and effective.
Speaking at the first anniversary celebration of Public Service Broadcasting (PSB) Nepal and the inauguration of Public Service Broadcasting and NTV World held today at Singha Durbar, Minister Kharel said that PSB content should create a meaningful impact on the public.
'The slogan of PSB must be justified. Its content should embody innovation and creativity, while ensuring easy access for all citizens,' he stated. The minister noted that PSB was established amid numerous challenges and underscored the importance of its sustainability and content diversity. He further stressed that PSB should include programs that reflect the identity and pride of the nation, representing perspectives of both Nepalis living abroad and foreigners.
Minister Kharel observed that the media sector is facing difficult circumstances not only in Nepal but also globally. He added that PSB should broadcast in a way that expands its radio and television audience through mobile and digital platforms.
'Television can no longer be operated by simply placing it against a wall as in the past. It is essential to adapt to changing times, technologies, and tools. Through all five NTV channels, we must earn public trust and increase engagement and viewership, while remaining competitive with the private sector,' he remarked.
On the occasion, Minister Kharel expressed confidence that the government would help ensure the sustainability and commercialization of the mass media sector by managing technology and human resources to promote professionalism. He also acknowledged that media organizations are facing mounting challenges and growing obstacles to survival.
