KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 4 The Ministry of Health and Population has urged the public to remain vigilant against seasonal influenza as flu cases typically rise with dropping temperatures. According to ministry spokesperson Dr. Prakash Budhathoki, the influenza virus becomes more active in winter and can infect individuals of all age groups - from infants and young adults to the elderly. Children, senior citizens and people with low immunity are at a higher risk of contracting the virus, he said. Most flu patients do not require medical treatment or antiviral medication. However, the ministry warns that individuals with chronic illnesses, pregnant women, the elderly and those with weakened immunity may experience complications and should remain under medical supervision. How the flu spreads The virus transmits through droplets released when an infected person talks, coughs or sneezes, which can enter the nose or mouth of nearby individuals. It may also spread by touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the face. Common symptoms Fever, headache, cough, sore throat, blocked or runny nose, body aches and fatigue. Prevention measures The ministry advises maintaining distance from sick individuals, covering the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing, staying physically active, drinking plenty of fluids and consuming nutritious food. People are also encouraged to stay home when ill, wash hands regularly with soap and water or use sanitizer, and avoid touching their eyes, nose or mouth.
