KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 11 A 10-point accord was signed between the Gen Z representatives and the government yesterday night. But as the deal was being signed, some youth showed their discontent by tearing it up in front of Prime Minister Sushila Karki. The government ratified the Gen Z agreement that was reached yesterday. The decision to ratify the agreement was made during a Cabinet meeting today, according to Minister for Communications Jagdish Kharel, who is the government spokesperson. He said that the meeting also decided to implement the agreement with high priority by the relevant ministry. Spokesperson Kharel also informed that the meeting decided to expand the scope of the Gen Z Movement Inquiry Commission as per the agreement reached between the prime minister and the Gen Z representatives. Meanwhile, The Himalayan Times spoke with Gen Z leaders to find out why some of them were unhappy with the deal they had made with the government. Following the incident, Gen Z leaders stated that a few youth acted out of vested interest, highlighting that they were not present during the protest. They reaffirmed that they would fight for its widespread ownership and that they were happy with the 10-point agreement, which addresses the issues of political, legal, and constitutional reform. The majority of them, however, agreed that putting the agreement's provisions into action would be difficult. A Gen Z leader who participated in the meeting told THT, 'The majority of the Gen Z representatives have agreed on this, but we cannot make everyone happy. The collective question is that of the implementation and the political ownership of the document for which we are working round-the-clock now.' Pradeep Gyawali told THT, 'We are all in on the same mandate, but a few of them acted based on their vested interest in yesterday's meeting. We are working towards the implementation of the agreement as the Cabinet recommends it,' he added. 'It will be sent to the president for final approval before being published in the Nepal Gazette with legal recognition.' Gen Z leader Amit Khanal also said that it's daunting and certainly not possible to fulfil everyone's demands. 'However, we all who believe in constitutionalism and democracy are on the same page,' he stated. Arjun Shah stated, 'This government is just focused on election and sidelining Gen Z demands, which raises questions on the validity of the document.' 'The president should sign the agreement, and a formal date should be announced for the implementation to not let the Gen Z revolution and sacrifices be compromised,' he said. 'Most of us are on the same page for the mandate, except a few of them,' stated Aditya Karn, another Gen Z leader. According to him, the government should complete all tasks that fall within its executive authority before the upcoming election. 'However, the matters requiring constitutional amendments must be addressed through the proper parliamentary process. Political parties should recognise this as a mandate from the Gen Zs and act responsibly within the constitutional framework,' he added.
