Gen-Z Protest caused Rs 84.45bln in physical losses: govt committee

KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 12 A government committee formed to assess damages from the Gen-Z Protest has submitted its report to Prime Minister Sushila Karki, estimating total physical losses at Rs 84.45 billion. Committee Coordinator and National Planning Commission Secretary Rabilal Panth presented the report's executive summary at Thursday's Cabinet meeting. The committee completed its assessment within 75 days. According to the report, protests affected 262 local levels across 54 districts in all seven provinces. The protest resulted in 77 deaths-20 on September 8, 37 on September 9, and 20 in the days following the protests. Another 429 people, including 17 children under 13, were injured. A total of 2,168 institutions were affected. The report documented damage to 2,671 buildings, with losses exceeding Rs 39.31 billion. During the unrest, 12,659 vehicles were damaged, causing an estimated loss of Rs 12.93 billion. The government and public sector incurred losses of Rs 44.93 billion, while the private sector suffered damages of Rs 33.54 billion. Losses in community and other sectors amounted to Rs 5.97 billion, the committee said.
