Major parties to submit PR candidate lists to EC today

Scrutiny begins December 30 as HoR election preparations gather pace

KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 29 Major political parties are set to submit their closed lists of candidates under the Proportional Representation (PR) system for the House of Representatives (HoR) election–2082 BS to the Election Commission (EC) today, the final day of the submission process. According to the EC's election schedule, the submission of PR lists began on Sunday. While several smaller parties submitted their lists on the first day, larger parties, including the Nepali Congress, CPN (UML), Nepal Communist Party (NCP) and the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), are expected to file their lists today after concluding internal consultations. Political parties are required to submit supporting documents along with the closed lists, including verification that the proposed candidates are registered voters, their voter identification numbers, and copies of citizenship certificates. EC Spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai said that scrutiny of the PR lists submitted on December 28 and 29 will be conducted from December 30 to January 4. Political parties will be allowed to make necessary corrections between January 5 and 11, while verification of the lists is scheduled from January 12 to 17. The Election Commission will publish the preliminary closed PR list on January 18, followed by the final list on February 3. According to the EC, a total of 100 political parties, using 93 election symbols, have applied to participate in the PR system. Each party is required to submit a closed list comprising a minimum of 11 and a maximum of 110 candidates. The House of Representatives election is scheduled for March 5, 2026. The number of registered voters stands at 18,903,689. Voters will cast two ballots-one for the first-past-the-post system and another for the proportional representation system.
