EC investigates complaints against HoR nominations as polls near

KATHMANDU, JANUARY 22 With 42 days remaining for the House of Representatives (HoR) elections, the Election Commission (EC) is investigating complaints filed against a handful of candidate nominations before publishing the provisional list of candidates. According to EC Assistant Spokesperson Kul Bahadur GC, the investigation into the complaints began at 3:00 pm on Wednesday and will continue until 5:00 pm today. Both the nominations and the related complaints are currently under review. As per the election schedule, the EC will publish the provisional list of candidates between 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm today. Candidates will be allowed to withdraw their nominations from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm on Friday, January 23. The final list of candidates will be made public between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm on Friday, while election symbols will be allotted from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm the same day. Three election-related events are scheduled for Friday at 77 Offices of Chief Election Officers and 88 Offices of Election Officers. According to data received by the EC, a total of 3,487 nominations have been registered for the HoR elections slated for March 5. Of these, 3,089 were filed by men, 396 by women, and one by a candidate from a gender and sexual minority group. The EC said complaints have been lodged against five nominations from four constituencies-Sunsari-2, Rautahat-1, Bhaktapur-2 and Kailali-2-with two complaints related to Bhaktapur-2 alone.
