KATHMANDU, JANUARY 23 UNICEF, in partnership with the Government of Finland, on Thursday opened Jhalko: Glimpses of West Rukum, a child-led photography exhibition highlighting the importance of education continuity during and after emergencies. The exhibition, organised as part of the long-standing collaboration between the Government of Nepal, UNICEF and Finland, features photographs taken by students of Shree Bheri Dobhan Secondary School in West Rukum, one of the schools damaged during the 2023 Jajarkot earthquake.
UNICEF said the photographs reflect children's lived experiences of crisis and recovery, emphasising the role of education in providing safety, psychosocial support and stability. Following the earthquake, UNICEF supported 383 temporary learning centres and later constructed 56 semi-permanent transitional learning centres across 50 schools, with an additional 90 currently under construction. The exhibition will remain open to the public from January 24 to 25 at Patan Durbar Square to mark the International Day of Education.
