KATHMANDU, JANUARY 24 The International Day of Education is being observed worldwide today under the theme 'The Power of Youth in Co-creating Education.' The United Nations has marked January 24 as the International Day of Education since 2019 to highlight education's role in peace and development. The right to education is guaranteed under Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and reinforced by the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Education also forms a core pillar of the Sustainable Development Goals, with Goal 4 dedicated to inclusive, equitable and quality education for all. According to UNESCO, around 250 million children and adolescents globally remain out of school, while 763 million adults lack basic education skills.
