UML and NC candidates sweep Koshi Province NA seats

KATHMANDU, JANUARY 25 CPN (UML) candidates Roshani Meche and Somnath Portel emerged victorious in the National Assembly elections from Koshi Province on Sunday. Meche, a candidate jointly endorsed by the Nepali Congress (NC) and UML, won the women's category with a vote weightage of 7,173, defeating her nearest competitor, Namita Neupane of the Nepali Communist Party, who secured 2,268. Portel, contesting in the Dalit category, defeated his nearest rival, Khem Sundas of the Nepali Communist Party, securing a vote weightage of 7,423 against Sundas' 2,027. In the Khas Arya category, Sunil Bahadur Thapa of the Nepali Congress was elected unopposed. Koshi Province has voters from 137 local levels: 113 from NC, 108 from UML, 36 from NCP, four each from the Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal (JSPN) and Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), and two independents. At the provincial level, there are 29 voters from NC, 40 from UML, 17 from NCP, five from RPP, and one from JSPN. Meanwhile, the names of three PA members from NCP, two from UML, and one from Shram Sanskriti Party, who had filed candidacy for the upcoming House of Representatives (HoR) election, were removed from the voter list. Additionally, the suspended chair of Jhapa Rural Municipality, facing corruption charges, was barred from voting. (With inputs from Rastriya Samchar Samiti)
