Martyr Day being observed today

KATHMANDU, JANUARY 30 Martyr Day is being observed across the country today with various programmes to honor those who sacrificed their lives for the nation and its people. The day commemorates the contributions and sacrifices of martyrs, including Shukra Raj Shastri, Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Dasharath Chand, and Ganga Lal Shrestha, along with other known and unknown martyrs who played a vital role in Nepal's struggle for democracy. Martyr Week is observed annually from Magh 10 to 16 by various organizations in memory of those who fought against the Rana regime. In 1997 BS, Shukra Raj Shastri was executed at Pachali, Teku, on Magh 10; Dharma Bhakta Mathema at Shifal on Magh 13; and Ganga Lal Shrestha and Dasharath Chand at Shobha Bhagawati on Magh 15 for demanding independence and civil liberties. In a message on the occasion, Prime Minister Sushila Karki paid tribute to all martyrs, stating that the country stands at a historic turning point due to their courage, awareness, and determination. She emphasized that the responsibility of building a nation grounded in ethics, good governance, and respect for citizens must remain a guiding principle for all leaders. Similarly, President Ramchandra Paudel urged political parties, the public, and all stakeholders to work sincerely to fulfill the aspirations of the martyrs. In his message, he said Martyr Day should inspire efforts toward sustainable peace, good governance, development, and prosperity achieved through the federal democratic republican system. Both leaders called for honoring the martyrs not only through remembrance but also by translating their sacrifices into meaningful progress for the nation.
