29 killed, 190 injured in road accidents in Sarlahi in six months

KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 1 At least 29 people were killed and 190 others seriously injured in 641 road accidents in Sarlahi during the first six months of the current fiscal year, according to the District Traffic Police Office. Most of the victims were motorcyclists and passengers of public vehicles, said Traffic Police Chief Inspector Ashok Sah. He attributed the majority of accidents to violations of traffic rules by drivers and pedestrians. During the period, traffic police collected Rs 4.8 million in fines from violators. Action was taken against motorists for driving without licenses, not wearing helmets, lacking travel permits, and carrying passengers beyond permitted capacity, Sah said. Police have also intensified monitoring of the mandatory two-driver provision for long-distance passenger buses. Of the 7,277 buses checked, 22 were found in violation, according to the traffic police.
